The objective of the work carried out is to define, evaluate, and plan the implementation of a network of control points, both quantitatively and qualitatively, regarding the status of water bodies in the Baix Ter area, classifying the control points based on their priority, type, and magnitude of the corresponding action.
The surface water body corresponding to the Baix Ter is the water that flows superficially along the course of the Ter river, all its tributaries, and the channels derived from it, between the gorge of Sant Julià de Ramis and the Gola del Ter. This surface water body is linked to three underground water bodies.
On one hand, there is the alluvial aquifer of the Cubeta de Celrà, which follows the current course of the Ter and is bounded by the municipalities of Medinyà, Cervià de Ter, Sant Jordi Desvalls, Flaçà, Bordils, and Celrà. Below and above it are the shallow aquifer of the Baix Ter alluvial plain and the deep aquifer of the Baix Ter alluvial plain. Both water bodies follow the current course of the river and the Molí irrigation channel (or the former northern branch of the Ter), draining into Estartit and Escala.
To protect the water of the Ter River, its aquifers, and to ensure its availability for all uses (municipal supply for the 40 municipalities in the Baix Ter plain, agricultural development, tourism and industry, the hydro-ecological sustainability of historical irrigation channels, wetlands, and landscapes), a public law corporation named the Central Board of Users of Baix Ter Waters (JCUABT) has been created.
As part of the Specialization and Territorial Competitive Project (PECT) Girona Water-Sensitive Region, the JCUABT (Junta Central d’Usuaris d’Aigües del Baix Empordà) aims to promote the creation of a control point network for monitoring the water bodies of the Baix Ter.
At each control point, the necessary actions (civil works, sensor technology, and/or telemetry) have been defined according to the specific needs of that point. Each control point has a summary sheet that identifies and locates the point, describes the current state of the control element, proposes actions, and presents an estimated assessment of the implementation of new structures and equipment, forming groups based on the type of action. The points have been categorized into four (4) priority levels.
The total actions planned for the implementation of the Baix Ter Control Network have a preliminary estimate exceeding 3 million euros.
The variables to be measured may include (depending on the control point): level, flow rate, electrical conductivity, and operating time of the pumping equipment. All points will be integrated into the control network and will provide information (in real-time or after the analysis has been conducted or data collected) on piezometric level, flowing flow rate, and the chemical and microbiological composition of the water.
